EYE HEALTH
Deterioration in your eyesight can be gradual and often go unnoticed. That is why a regular eye test can help detect certain conditions early and maintain optimum vision.
Cataract
Cataract is when the clear lens inside your eye becomes misty and yellow. The process is gradual and usually occurs as we get older. Young people may also develop cataract, through eye injury. Medical conditions such as diabetes or certain medication can also cause cataract. You may notice your vision becoming blurry, suffer from glare from headlights or street lights as well as colours becoming more faded and yellow. During an eye test, we can help detect and monitor any cataract formation. The optometrist will also be able to refer you through your GP, for removal of cataract, if it is necessary.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve, which connects your eyes to your brain. The damage usually occurs by build up of pressure of fluid inside your eye. Damage to the optic nerve can cause changes in visual field, which if left untreated can, over a period of time lead to significant vision loss and even blindness. A series of tests are needed to diagnose glaucoma. At Mandeville Opticians, we carry out the necessary tests
Did you know if you are over 40 and have a close relative with glaucoma, you may be entitled to an NHS eye test.
Macula Degeneration
The macula is an area on the retina which allows you to see fine details. Macula degeneration occurs when there is damage to the macula. You may find it difficult to read or recognise faces. A common symptom of macula degeneration is noticing straight lines becoming bent or wavy. A regular eye test is important in detecting this
Blepharitis
This is a condition affecting the eyelids. It is when the eyelids become inflamed. They may feel irritated and sticky and are often red and crusty. Blepharitis is a long term condition. Good lid hygiene can help clear up the condition and maintain it. We have a variety of lidscleansers and drops that can be recommended by the optometrist.
